SUMMARY
This study was carried out
in «La Payunia» reserve, department of Malargüe, Mendoza. This
area is characterized by an uneven relief of volcanic origin, which serves as
shelter for important guanaco populations. Physionomically, it is a grassland
with isolated shrubs. The objetives of this work were the following: a)To determine
diet habits of guanacos, diet composition and animal preferences, through the
method of direct visual observation. b) To determine primary productivity of
the main components of the herbaceous layer, through the method of successive
crops. The mean plant coverage of the area is 44%; 73% of such
percentage corresponds to the herbaceous layer. Productivity was based on the
contribution of the three most important species of the layer (Panicum urvilleanum,
Stipa ssp and Sporobolus rigens.). Which in turn represent the most important
contribution to the diet. Out of a total of 65 species studied, 47 were consumed
(72,3%). Out of the latter, 66,7 % corresponds to shrubby plants.

Stipa sp., Bouteloua curtipendula, Erioneuron pilosum y Sporobolus cryptandrus.
SUMMARY
The objective of this paper was to learn about the composition of the diet of
goats, as well as their relative preference for the species this diet is mape
up of. The study area is located in the Tupungato Hills, Luján de Cuyo,
Mendoza, Argentina, at the foot of Los Andes mountain range, at an altitude
of 1,400 m above sea level.
Mean annual precipitation
is 184,10 mm; rainfall occurs in summer, and snowfall is
frequent, though not heavy, during the winter-spring period. Mean annual temperature
is 13.5 °C. The dominant vegetation is a shrubby steppe of Larrea divaricata,
asociated with Schinus fasciculatus and Condalia microphylla among others. The
grass layer is mainly made up of Stipa sp, Bouteloua curtipendula, Erioneuron
pilosum and Sporobolus cryptandrus. We worked with a flock of native adult goats,
and took care not to modify the usual management of the region.
We use the method of direct visual observation of goats selected at random.
After letting the animal loose, for a period of two hours in the morning, every
fifteen days, throughout one entire year, we recorded the following data:
- plant species consumed.
- plant organs consumed(leaf, stem,
flower, fruit).
- number of bites per plant species.
- number of plants grazed per species.
- phenology of plant species.
For the statistical analysis, we used the reciprocal average method and the
dicretization test.
Out of a total of 99 species, 76(76,8%) were consumed. Intake of shrub species
was 94,5%, and that of grasses and herbs 65%.
Species consumed were classified, according to the importance of their participation
in the diet, into:
- Principal.
- Seasonal.
- Of dispersed intake.
- Of occasional intake.
Leguminous species represented 32,84% of the annual diet.
The intake of shrub species increases in winter and fall, whereas herbs are
used in spring, and grasses in summer. Diet diversity varies from ten to thirty-one
species a day, reaching its maximun value in the month of May.

SUMMARY
The purpose of this study was to estimate the cattle carrying capacity of the
Mendoza plain rangelands. Annual forage production was estimated from the dependable
rains (p= 80%) and the rain-use efficiency factor (kg DM ha -1 year -1 mm -1
). The herbaceous layer accessible to cattle is 80%, browse is 50%. The year-long
proper use factor considered was 30%. The estimated carrying capacity of the
Mendoza plain was, on average, 24.3 ha AU -1 . It ranged from 64.5 to 16.0 ha
AU -1 in the northern part of the Lavalle department and the eastern part of
the General Alvear department, respectively.
The comparison between
stocking rates corresponding to 1993 and the estimated
carrying capacity, at department level, was made.

y permanencia en el lugar; analizar el proceso de ocupación de la tierra;
SUMMARY
The aims of this work
were: to determine the number of livestock stations, numberof inhabitants and
their permanence on the site; to analyze the process of land
ocupation; to survey the condition of dwellings and services; and to take a
census
of the number and species of animals reared. In order to accomplish all intented
aims the inductive method was used, by conducting surveys among the resident
population. There are 12 livestock stations in the Maure basin, and a total
of 44
people. The working population is only 52% of the above total. The livestock
stations located in the higher lands of the basin were established over 30 years
ago,
and the others are less than 5 years old. None of the livestock
tenders owns the land, and their dwellings are built of diverse
materials. Livestock population is composed of 84 pigs, 335 horses, 15 cows,
and 157 goats. The last three species are equivalent to 450 animal units that
graze
in the 5,000 ha basin, approximately 1 animal unit every 12 ha, with an available
plant cover of about 50%.

SUMMARY
The objetive of this work was to study the germinative potential, viability
and weight of Atriplex lampa seeds with different storage periods under uncontrolled
conditions, as well as the effect of seminal covers on the same parameters.
Seeds from the same source stored over eight years and over one month, with
and without bracts, were germinated on Petri dishes at 20° C in a growth
chamber. Viability, weight of 1000 seeds with and without covers and daily germination
state over fifteen days were quantified. Thirty three percent of the seeds that
had been stored eight years lost the viability. There were no differences in
the weight of 1000 seeds
with bracts for both storage periods, but there was a significant decrease in
eight years old seeds without bracts.
Germination was larger
in seeds without bracts for each variable. The germinative process was higher
in seeds without bracts stored for a month. It is posed that seeds stored during
eight years underuncontrolled conditions underwent deterioration along the ageing
process, and that seminal covers would have inhibitors or inhibitory mechanisms
that prevent germination.

SUMMARY
The already existing birds lists were updated during the 1987-1995 period in
the Reserve Laguna Llancanelo, Malargüe, Mendoza. The work was done systematically
surveying, so the reserve was sectored in fifferent types of coastal habitats
and the surronding environments of the water. The different sectors were seasonally
looked over through transects and fixed points for observation. Results obtained
added 62 species to the preexisting lists, reaching a total of
155 bird species (aquatic and nonaquatic) quoted for Laguna Llancanelo. In regards
to seasonal presence, it was determined that there exist 25 migrator species
that visit the habitat in summer or winter according to the group, using this
ecosystem for reproductive rest, wintering and breeding. The specific civersity,
the importance as reproductive site and for breeding of the native species,
as well as a resting a wintering site for transequatorial migratory species,
are some of the characteristics that have made this “humedal” outstanding
at international level.

SUMMARY
The pinhole borer Megaplatypus plicatus (Bréthes) = (Platypus sulcatus)
feed in Mendoza on different species of trees, and constitutes a new plague.
Common methods proposed to control are not usseful in the city, because chemical
substances are dangerous to people. Four diferent insecticides were tested,
resulting Lambdacianometrina (pyrethroid) the less nocive to people and most
efective to control the plague.
