SUMMARY
The determination of transect size is of great importance in the projects
where Remote Sensing techniques are used. In these projects the covered areas
are generally widespread and the cost of the fieldwork must be balanced with
the total cost of the project. The optimal transect size to supervise remote
sensing techniques is determined in the present work. For this, the complex
relationship between the vegetation of semi-arid with reflectance and space
resolution of TM/Landsat images was considered . The information of six field
campaigns in a large region of the Brazilian northeast was used. Once the type
of vegetal cover which better explains the values of reflectance of the images
was determined, the optimal transect size of the fieldwork was specified. It
allows to obtain reliable data to supervise remote sensing techniques. At a
first stage, it was determined that the total and arboreal vegetal cover explains
better the values of reflectance in the visible spectral images. Although the
correlations are not high, they are consistent for change detection in the visible
range. Using the Pearson-Hartley graphics of Power of F Test, it was specified
that 45 m would be the minimum length of transect. This size would allow to
obtain excellent data from the vegetation of Caatingas abertas (shrub steppes) up to Caatingas arboreas (dry forest). Based on this
and the size of pixels of the images, the sampling with transects of 50 m with
north-south direction was recommended. This size and direction will allow to
obtain data of the land with 80% of probability of representing a TM/Landsat
pixel value.

SUMMARY
The objective of this work was to determine the effects of different
temperatures on the germination process of Zizyphus mistol Grisebach seeds,
and if they had a light requirement to germinate. Under controlled conditions
the seeds were incubated in trays and placed in germination chambers regulated
at constant temperatures of 10º, 15º, 20º, 25º 30º, 35º, 40º, 45º and alternated temperature
of 20º/30 ºC (16/8 h) and conduced under continuous darkness or under
daily photoperiod of 8 h light. The evaluated parameters in photoperiod conditions
were: the germination velocity or First count (% of normal seedlings at 8 days
from incubation) and the germination percentage or Final count (% or normal
seedlings at 12 days from incubation). The evaluated parameter in continuous
dark conditions was the percentage of germinated seeds ( % of seeds at least
with radicule emission at 12 days from incubation). The seeds of this specie
showed an optimal range of germination temperatures between constant 25º
and 35°C as well as alternant temperatures of 20º/30ºC. The extremes
cardinal temperatures were registered at 15º and 40ºC. It was not
observed light requirements for germination.

SUMMARY
With the finality of select a priori seeds of Zizyphus mistol Grisebach,
with better germination and vigor attributes to ensure their sexual multiplication,
it was correlated the size and weight of drupes, endocarps and seeds with both
physiological aspects. It was determined individually the size and weight of
the drupes and their respective endocarps and seeds. These were put to germinated
at constant 25° C and photoperiod of 8/ 16 h ( light/ dark) . At 12 days
of incubation germination and vigor (dry weight and height of seedlings) was
evaluated. Significative correlation was observed between weight and size of
seeds with vigor, and also between weight and size of drupes with weight and
size of respective seeds. The results suggest
the selection of seeds and drupes of greater size for multiplication purposes.

caudales abruptamente desarrolladas. Phymaturus vociferator ha sido previamente
identificado como Phymaturus flagellifer (= P. palluma).

SUMMARY
Phymaturus vociferator is described as a new species of iguanian
lizard, from central- southern Chile, related to P. verdugo from Peteroa Volcano
region, Malargüe, Mendoza Province. The only known population comes from
El Refugio, Laguna del Laja, in Antuco Volcano mountains, about 1700 m, close
to the Argentinean frontier, in the Andean region of the Bio Bio Region. Morphological
characters, pattern of coloration, and their isolated distribution, separate
this new taxon from the other species of the genus. It is a member of the flagellifer
species group, diagnosed by the presence of short superciliaries scales, with
five or more suboculars, three or four rows of lorilabials, the simphisial scute
narrower than rostral, commonly in contact with sublabials, and with caudal
spines abruptly developed. Phymaturus vociferator has previously
been confused with Phymaturus flagellifer (= P. palluma).

SUMMARY
In desert and semidesert environments, trees generate microhabitats
under their foliage originating particular edaphic and climatic conditions.
Epigeic communities developing in these environments require different conditions
from those of communities inhabiting beneath other plant strata or on bare soil.
In this paper we present a preliminary study dealing with epigeic arthropods
inhabiting under the foliage of mesquite trees (Prosopis flexuosa), in the Telteca
Reserve, Mendoza, Argentina (Monte biogeographical province). Two transects
with pitfall traps were checked 21 times since the summer of1994/95 until the
spring of 1996. The total amount of collected specimens was 7771 grouped into
228 taxa. The community was analyzed taking into account the taxonomic groups
and their seasonal changes, from which the most important in number of species
and specimens were Coleoptera, composed of 23 families, Hymenoptera with 7 families,
and Solifugae. These three groups represent more than 67% of the specimens collected.
Of the 71 families registered, including insects and arachnids, Mutillidae (Hymenoptera)
was the most numerous in number of specimens, followed by Scarabaeidae, Tenebrionidae
and Elateridae (Coleoptera). The most abundant species in the soil of Telteca
Reserve were Mutillidae sp. 1 (male), Elateridae sp. 1,
two species of Aphodiinae (Scarabeidae), two Tenebrionidae: Megelenophorus americanus
and Emmallodera hirtipes, two Hymenoptera: Plumarius sp. 1 (Plumaridae) and
Scaptodactilla heterogama (female) (Mutillidae), and one spider of Zodariidae:
Leprolochus birabeni. Concerning seasonal changes, spring and summer show the
highest abundance for nearly all groups. The same patterns registred in other
dry land studies were recognized.
